BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog

www.bmworacleracing.com/blog
Tom EhmanWelcome to the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog, periodic postings and postulations for our families, friends and fans as we pursue with passion our challenge for the 32nd America's Cup.

In June 2005, the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog was born. The enthusiastic response we have received since then has encouraged us to continue the Blog this year. The BMW ORACLE Racing Team, which has over 140 members worldwide, would like to give anyone interested the opportunity to get a closer look at the personal stories surrounding our team and the people involved. While we are professionals on a mission to win the Cup, there is a human-interest side to all that. And in many ways our team is like an extended family.

We would like to share with you our passion for sailing, the motivation it takes to meet difficult challenges, and some of our trials and tribulations.

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came." --USA President John F. Kennedy, at a dinner for the crews in Newport, RI on the eve of the 1962 America's Cup Match.

Nice Ink: Allianz Cup Competitor Commentary  Nov 2, 06:16

From Scuttlebutt (USA) this morning....

COMPETITOR COMMENTARY
(November 1, 2006) Brian Angel is a twenty-something year old Californian, scrapping anyway he can for invites to match race events. 2006 has proved to be a busy year for his team, where they competed in match race events such as the Congressional Cup (CA), Knickerbocker Cup (NY), Prince of Wales (TX), Nations Cup (Ireland), Antibes Cup (France), Match Race Lugano (Switzerland), Bermuda Gold Cup and Allianz Cup. The Scuttlebutt publisher met up with Brian in San Francisco last week, and here he submits his comments on the recently concluded Allianz Cup in San Francisco, CA.

"I've had a few people ask my why this event was so special.

"I first tell them how important it was for sailing, and for match racing in the US, to have a major media event on our turf. I tell them that this can be a launching pad for other match racing events all over the country, as well as proof that sailing can be a spectator sport. It gives sailors hope that they won't have to travel all the way across oceans to find top match race regattas, and it gives promise to sailors like myself, seeking sponsors to support their sailing campaigns. People do enjoy watching this sport, and sponsors can see a return on their money. Can you believe that there were hundreds, maybe thousands, of people at St. Francis Yacht Club watching the racing last week? Then consider all the viewers watching over the Internet on Sail.tv. What a revolution that was! I had friends all over the world telling me how great the coverage was!"

Record Temps in VLC  Oct 31, 23:36

From today's Valencia Life newsletter:

This month has gone down as being the hottest October ever recorded in the Valencian Community, with the average daily temperature exceeding the previous record by 3.10 degrees. The figures speak for themselves in the three capital cities: in Alicante the monthly average high was 21.7 degrees, when the normal reading would be 19.1; in Castellon, the average was 21.3 degrees as opposed to an average October of 18.3, and in Valencia the average was 21.9 as opposed to the usual 19.1

Allianz Cup: Epilogue  Oct 30, 13:24

“It’s quite astonishing at how good they are at what they do. It was an honor to be out and race amongst them. It is not often we see this caliber of sailing on San Francisco Bay.” --Larry Ellison, at the Allianz Cup post-race press conference Friday evening.

"Full marks for the gang from Sail.tv. Live streaming broadcast from the Allianz Cup on the internet, FREE, all day Friday, Saturday and Sunday as part of their 24 hour sailing network. Shot with multiple cameras, it was tied to the audio commentary by Tom Ehman, Gary Jobson and others. For someone who's dabbled a bit in Premiere and Final Cut Pro it was humbling to see the rather jaw-dropping technology and editing prowess on display. I was fortunate enough to share an office with the boys, mostly so I could tag onto their bandwidth. On demand broadband channels are the future, blurring the line between the internet and television. 'Convergence' at last. They're clearly onto something here." --David McCreary, editor of Scuttlebutt Europe, and webmaster this week for the Allianz Cup website.

Sunday: Fifth and Final Day  Oct 29, 16:10

Sorry to see Dicko & Co get knocked out in the quarterfinals yesterday, but it was a great day of close, hard racing among the world's best match racers. Highly entertaining, and a superb exhibition of skillful tactics and boathandling by all.

Full marks, too, to the Allianz and Oracle who, through the good efforts of the WMRT and Scott MacLeod's team, as well as host St. Francis YC, are putting on one hell of a good event.

Again today you can follow the finals live on www.sail.tv or at the Allianz Cup site where Dave McCreary is live blogging the action with updates several times per hour.

If my voice holds out, will again today be hosting the race commentary for the shoreside spectators and the Sail.TV webcast along with Geordie Shaver (USA).

Best news, perhaps, is that the four days of high pressure that has given us cloudless skies and unusually warm temps (high 70s) but light, fickle northerly winds has given way overnight to cool temps and strong westerly breezes. So not only did the clocks "fall back" in the USA and Europe last night, it would appear fall weather has arrived, at least here today in San Francisco.

SF Chronicle: the "Elite Eight"  Oct 28, 16:15

From this morning's San Francisco Chronicle:

Elite eight sail in Allianz Cup today
- Jim Doyle
Saturday, October 28, 2006

Eight pro skippers made it to the quarterfinals of the Allianz Cup on Friday, after sailing the regatta's preliminary rounds in light winds on San Francisco Bay. The eight face off today in a series of best-of-five match races.

The quarterfinal pairings are Ian Williams of Great Britain vs. Peter Gilmour of Australia; Ben Ainslie of Emirates Team New Zealand vs. Paolo Cian of Team Shosholoza; Peter Holmberg of the Alinghi team vs. Jesper Bank of United Internet Team Germany; Chris Dickson of the BMW Oracle syndicate vs. Ed Baird of Alinghi.

The touring pros are competing for a $100,000 purse in J/105s, a 35-footer. Each one-design boat has a five-man crew. Each race lasts about 15 to 20 minutes.

Earlier in the day, the 16 teams -- which included eight America's Cup skippers -- finished their preliminary rounds. Billionaire Larry Ellison snagged two wins in the round robin, but was eliminated from the event with a 2-5 record.

The regatta, which runs through Sunday, is being sailed off the Marina Green and Crissy Field. Winds permitting, races will begin as early as 10 a.m.

"Live, from San Francisco Bay...."  Oct 28, 10:19

AllianzOracle1Friday's Allianz Cup racing was streamed live on the internet on Sail.TV (www.sail.tv). This was not the first time for a WMRT event, but we are told reliably that it was the first-ever live airing -- internet or otherwise -- of a yacht racing event from San Francisco Bay.

And a glorious day it was! Close racing, light but reasonably steady breeze, that wonderful SF Bay vista, a nice crowd of spectators shoreside, and a number of spectator boats including the stunning replica of the schooner yacht America that started it all in 1851.

Saturday the quarter-finals begin at 1000 and will continue into the afternoon -- a tennis-ladder (head-to-head racing) of four pairs, including our own Chris Dickson & Co. racing against Alinghi's Ed Baird. First in each pair to win three matches will advance to the semis, slated to begin Saturday afternoon. The finals and consolation are on Sunday, also first to win three matches.

Follow all the action live on www.sail.tv from roughly 1000-1800 Pacific Time on Saturday; 1000 to 1500 on Sunday. Western Europe is nine hours ahead of San Francisco, so your starting time is 1900 (7pm) both days. Kiwis in New Zealand will have to figure out the time, as Saturday night here in the USA we go off Daylight Savings (Summer) Time -- and I am not sure if New Zealand is, or will be, 19, 20 or 21 hours ahead of San Francisco.

Oracle's World of its Own
By Erin Joyce
InternetNews.com

SAN FRANCISCO -- Reporter's Notebook: We came here from all over the globe, picked up our OracleWorld bags, and by night became a swarm of 42,000 attendees fanning out across the city by the Bay.

If you've ever wondered just how huge an installed base Oracle has to sell, wine and dine to, look no further than the extravaganza of the OracleWorld show, which literally stopped downtown traffic along parts of Howard Street this week. The city agreed to shut down parts of it for foot traffic.

Oracle was ready for them, starting with klieg lights flashing across the San Francisco skyline Sunday night. Red carpet through the cavernous Moscone convention center greeted attendees.

Oracle's CEO Larry Ellison even brought along his America's Cup racing yacht, and stuck it at the bottom of the escalators in the Moscone North section, just outside the keynote hall.

By Monday, the boat's sailing crew lined up to greet attendees and sign autographs. More than a few asked them: How'd you get that thing in here?

JOHN DVORAK'S SECOND OPINION
Oracle rocks San Francisco
Commentary: Shows how to do an event right
By John C. Dvorak
Last Update: 1:20 AM ET Oct 26, 2006

BERKELEY, Calif. (MarketWatch) -- I didn't ask to find out exactly which Hollywood producer or megastar event manager was behind the scenes of this week's Oracle confab in San Francisco but I have never witnessed anything close to an event this slick. And I can assure you that I have been on the lookout.

With an estimated 45,000 showgoers each spending upwards of $2000 to get in the door this gave the company a little leeway insofar as spending big. The topper was probably the party for 20,000 people in the 22 acres surrounding the Cow Palace highlighted by an Elton John concert.

The party included free flowing wines and gourmet food. At the same time other more exclusive parties were underway. More parties were scheduled for every day of the show.

I could go on and on about the elaborate aspects of this event, dubbed Oracle Open World 2006, including somehow getting Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's racing yacht into the passageway between the North and South Hall or the fact that the entire North Hall was turned into a monstrous theater for the Keynote speches. Or that for the first time The streets between the convention center were closed so huge food tents could be set up to feed the showgoers.

But that's not what the show was about. It was about the price of Oracle Corporation (ORCL: 18.62, -0.27, -1.4%) stock.

Yes there were third-party vendors there and plenty of meetings and educational sessions. But they almost seemed secondary to the glitz.

There was obvious to me that all this showing off and the extravagance was to let people know that Oracle is a big-time player, not a cheap operation like, uh, Microsoft. And it's definitely not like the low budget boys at MySQL.

To me the proof appeared just before the Larry Ellison keynote. The podiums were removed and special podiums were brought in along with Plexiglas side pedestals all of which said NASDAQ. I posted a picture of this for you on the blog.

It's not a bad idea to let people know you on listed on NASDAQ, Heck, maybe they'll buy some shares after the show, who knows?

And if the Ellison speech gets any press they'll catch the NASDAQ logo and perhaps people will make the association and buy the stock. Who knows.

The kinds of cross-promotions by the genius who was behind this event were, simply put, awesome. While Oracle was pocketing the $2,000 plus the fees from exhibitors the showgoers were getting the lunch from Wipro the hot laptop luggage from AMD an umbrella from Fujitsu and on and on.

The press facilities were impeccable with all the open computers anyone would ever need. And there was plenty of hot food for starving reporters.

There is always an air at these tightly focused events. Are people gloomy? Are they upbeat?

From what I could tell the showgoers were actually jacked up. In other words the energy was high and positive. Always a good sign for a company like this.
Never take this sort of observation lightly. I've been going to trade shows like this for 30 years and you can tell how things are going for an industry or a company when a large group gathers like this.

This attitude and energy, although completely subjective, usually gets reflected in the stock price. And when you come to think of it, what is more subjective than perceived value of a stock?

I'd keep an eye on Oracle. I was impressed.

Allianz Cup: Day 1  Oct 26, 13:29

AllianzOracleSFO, 0430 Thu -- Long but exciting day yesterday (Wednesday) for everyone involved, except Larry's team and the other seven teams in Group "B" as they ended up having the day off.

There are a total of 16 teams seeded more or less equally into two groups ("A" and "B") and only Group "A" raced raced Wednesday. Between noon, when the wind settled down, and 1830 they completed their entire round robin of seven flights -- 28 matches in all -- in a most-unusual (for SF Bay) northeasterly breeze.

Dicko & Co were back-footed a bit with an opening-match loss to local favorite Chris Perkins, a J105 fleet-racing champion from host St Francis YC. (Chris is also an old friend who, coincidentally, was CFO for our Oracle BMW team in AC 31.) However, as the day progressed Dicko's team found their stride and ended up tied for fourth on 4-3 (win-loss) with Johnie "B Good" Berntsson (NOR). They will race off Friday morning with five other teams in the "repechage" round. Two of those six teams will then advance to the quarterfinals later Friday along with the top three teams from Groups A and B at the end of their respective rounds robin.

Had thought we might be able to do some live-blogging during yesterday's racing. But with only a few minutes between flights we could not find the time as your Ed. is doubling here as a race commentator. Sorry, no chance today, either, as we are hosting 500 Oracle Corp guests on the beautiful Spirit of San Francisco

But check the Allianz Cup or WMRT sites for regular updates and details of each day's racing. Also our main team website. Also worth a look is the Valencia Sailing site, which is posting video clips of each day's racing. Reminder, too, that this Saturday and Sunday there will be live internet TV coverage of Allianz Cup racing at www.sail.tv.

Today, Larry's team will race in their Group B round robin against a very talented field including Team Alinghi helmsman Ed Baird (USA), reigning WMRT world champion Peter GIlmour (AUS), United Internet Team Germany's Jesper Bank (DEN), and Cameron Dunn (NZL) of Mascalzone Latino Capitalia Team.

Nice Ink: Allianz Cup in today's SF Chronicle  Oct 23, 15:10

Allianz Cup lures top sailors

Software tycoon Larry Ellison, eight America's Cup skippers and other touring pros will compete this week in 35-foot sloops on San Francisco Bay for a $100,000 purse.

Clearly, the billionaire sailor doesn't need the moola. But with his Oracle World overtaking downtown, the kingpin can hardly wait to compete with the pros.

Sixteen teams have entered the Allianz Cup regatta, which begins Wednesday and runs through Sunday. It will be sailed off the Marina Green and Crissy Field -- close to shore, with the dueling skippers in full view of spectators.
