BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog

www.bmworacleracing.com/blog
Tom EhmanWelcome to the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog, periodic postings and postulations for our families, friends and fans as we pursue with passion our challenge for the 32nd America's Cup.

In June 2005, the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog was born. The enthusiastic response we have received since then has encouraged us to continue the Blog this year. The BMW ORACLE Racing Team, which has over 140 members worldwide, would like to give anyone interested the opportunity to get a closer look at the personal stories surrounding our team and the people involved. While we are professionals on a mission to win the Cup, there is a human-interest side to all that. And in many ways our team is like an extended family.

We would like to share with you our passion for sailing, the motivation it takes to meet difficult challenges, and some of our trials and tribulations.

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came." --USA President John F. Kennedy, at a dinner for the crews in Newport, RI on the eve of the 1962 America's Cup Match.

1-Series Headed to the States?  Jul 16, 10:15

The BMW 1-Series is a favorite of the team here in Valencia. Quick, stylish, compact and easy to park, it has proper legroom for four real adults (one need not have toothpicks for legs to sit in the back) and decent capacity in the boot/hatchback. So far the 1-Series has not been sold in the USA, though its introduction in 2008 if not before is widely rumoured.

Today we came across this post on the Autoblog, with a "spy photo" of a 1-Series sporting a distributor license/number place ("DST" on the left) driving in the Bay Area. And someone posted a comment saying they had recently seen a 1-Series in Ann Arbor (Michigan), where your Ed. happened to have grown up. "A-squared" as the locals call it is home not only of the University of Michigan -- where a number of BMW ORACLE team members matriculated, notably team meteorologist Chris Bedford (USA) and design team members Alon Finkelstein (RSA) and Brian Baker (USA) -- but also the USA's federal auto emissions testing laboratory. Hmmm....

Nice Ink: AC Teams to Race at Kiel  Jul 15, 06:29

kiel1
A good piece about the upcoming German Sailing Grand Prix by German journalist Andreas Kling is running in the German media and elsewhere around the world this morning....

America's Cup Grand Prix comes to Kiel
1:53 AM Sat 15 Jul 2006

America’s Cup Racing Yachts from BMW ORACLE Racing (USA), Team Shosholoza (South Africa) and United Internet Team Germany prepare to race Grand Prix in August in Kiel.

They are the Formula One crafts in sailing, 24 metres long, 33 metre mast-height and pure high-tech: the America’s Cup Class (ACC) yachts.

Usually they are kept away from close public eyes in the syndicates’ base camps, but in Kiel the three ACC yachts and their professional crews present themselves during the German Sailing Grand Prix from 3rd to 6th August. The syndicates BMW ORACLE Racing (USA), Team Shosholoza (South Africa) and the United Internet Team Germany will sail fleet and match races directly in front of the public. For the first time in the 155-year old history of the oldest sports trophy in the world, three of the current challengers will meet in Germany to compete against each other.

The Louis Vuitton Act 12 finished on July 2 was the last qualification regatta for the 32nd America’s Cup in 2006. But for three of the twelve teams competing the racing season has not yet ended. In Kiel they will sail another showdown. The three top skippers Chris Dickson (USA 71), Mark Sadler (RSA 48) and Jesper Bank (GER 72) are promising thrilling battles in the demanding waters of Kiel.

While the Cup racing is the highlight of the event, an interesting addition will be the public program in the race village at the inner fjord, attracting up to 200.000 sailing enthusiasts to visit KIEL.SAILING CITY.

The event area known as Kiellinie from the Kiel Week starts at the Institute of Marine Sciences, where the Cup boats are moored, on to the Reventlouwiese. Along the way numerous panels will inform about the America’s Cup and the three teams. Grinder contests, match race simulation and merchandising articles from the involved parties will be offered to the public. And in a water basin different America’s Cup models can be sailed via remote control by everyone.

For the big ones it gets serious on Friday. In the beginning of the event, on Thursday (August 3) the teams will sail a warm-up on J/80 boats in the afternoon (13–17 h). Each crew will consist of two America’s Cup sailors supplemented by VIP guests.

The first fleet race starts on Friday at noon directly in front of the Institute of Marine Sciences. Turning marks in the inner fjord of Kiel lead the impressive yachts along the cities’ coastline and then out again to the open Baltic Sea at the bay of Strande or Stollergrund at Kiel Bay, where a round robin with three match races will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Even out at sea the sailing stars will not be out of sight.

The races will be shown live, along with commentary, on a big screen behind the stage in the race village. And everyone who wants to watch the racing more closely, can book a trip to the match race course at the tourist information of KIEL.SAILING CITY (phone: +49/1805/656700). The range of spectator boats starts with the traditional three mast-schooner Thalassa, continue with a big motor vessel Nordstern and culminate in sailing on an authentic America’s Cup yacht.

Kiel would not be the capital of sailing, if the visitors could not test the water sport themselves. The Camp24sieben is a project, organised by Stadtwerke Kiel and KIEL.SAILING CITY on the same ground where the German Sailing Grand Prix action takes place and offers free sailing for children and adults on the weekend of August 5/6. Everyone who has ever made the experience of wind and waves can imagine the performance of the professional sailors on their racing machines much better.

After their daily match race duels boat against boat, which will also be held on Saturday at the same time and Sunday two hours earlier, the trio starts again for a fleet race. The finish can be watched in the inner fjord of Kiel at around 6 to 6.30 p.m. (Sunday 4 to 4.30 pm). Afterwards, Christoph Schumann, the voice of sailing in Germany, will talk to the sailors of the day up on stage in the race village.

kiel3
The first German Sailing Grand Prix will convey the fascination and excitement of the America’s Cup to enthusiastic sailing fans and interested general public alike. The three teams, which have asked the Kiel Yacht Club to act as the race organiser, take it seriously: 'We will start with our top teams and give our best,' the three crews said in one voice.

The German team will show up in their home port with the GER 72, a formerly Italian boat from Mascalzone Latino of 2003. In Kiel the crew around skipper Jesper Bank had been training for several weeks last year. 'I don’t know, whether it will be an advantage', said the Danish skipper, 'but we want to improve our results from the last races in the Valencia Acts.' In Spain, the United Internet Team Germany became next to last, also because the other teams started with their faster new boats.

But in Kiel they will all start with their training yachts. Even the USA 71 from BMW ORACLE Racing is three years old and served as sparring boat on the whay to the finals of the Louis Vuitton Cup in 2003 against the Swiss Alinghi team, that later won the America’s Cup.

'It will be a great opportunity to line up against two other challengers in a different venue from Valencia and bring the excitement of America’s Cup Class racing to Germany for the first time', says Chris Dickson, skipper of the USA 71. 'We race every chance we get in preparation for 2007. Many of us have sailed in Kiel but never before in America’s Cup Class yachts so it will be a new experience for all of us'.

Tim Kröger (41) is boat captain on the RSA 48 in the Shosholoza Team, which is supported by T-Systems. The boat which is the yacht that Prada Challenge (Italy) had used in the Louis Vuitton Cup 2000 has been prepared for the start to show a perfect performance. Kröger: 'The RSA 48 is the foundation stone of our campaign, it is like a myth. It made its way from Cape Town to Valencia and now comes to my home country. It means a lot to us to show the yacht in Germany.'

Spritting Image  Jul 14, 15:19

This post has any number of possible good titles. Another is "On the Waterfront" -- the name, of course, of the classic 1954 mobster movie starring Marlon Brando in which he gave his famous, "I coulda been a contendah" speech. On the Waterfront won Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Supporting Actress for Saint. Will bow sprits be winning any awards come next year? Or will they just be Yesterday's Love?

To our teammates Julien Cressant, Laurent Esquier, Michel Kemerac, Bert Pace, and our other colleagues and friends of the French persuasion (especially LV's Christine Belanger and Bruno Trouble), our best wishes on the occasion of your Fête Nationale or national holiday.

Commonly known, at least in English, as Bastille Day, it commemorates the 1790 Fête de la Fédération, held on the first anniversary of the storming of the Bastille prison on 14 July 1789. The Fête de la Fédération was seen as a symbol of the uprising of the modern French "nation", and of the reconciliation of all the French inside the constitutional monarchy which preceded the First Republic, during the French Revolution. [Source: Answers.com and Wikipedia]

So, today put the World Cup behind you. Vive La France!

(Someday you have to tell us what makes M. Zidane tick.)

And with proof-reading thanks to Pierre Orphanidis, the hybrid if not well-bred (says he 50% Gaulic) webmaster of the popular Valencia Sailing blog.

The Beat Goes On  Jul 11, 18:26

After a short break for "Pope Weekend," 76 and 87 and the sailing and support teams were back at it today on the Mediterranean waters off Valencia, while many of our shore team and marketing team were hard at work planning and organizing our next gig: the German Sailing Grand Prix, the regatta with Shosholoza and United Internet Team Germany at Kiel (GER) the first weekend of August.

Mark "Squark" Bradford (AUS, sailing team) has been appointed by Dicko as project manager so far as our entry in the event as a team is concerned, and Mirko has Benedikt "Pope" Horber (GER, marketing team) overseeing the day-to-day details of the event which we are, in effect, co-hosting with the other two teams and their sponsors -- with plenty of help from the City of Kiel and the Kieler Yacht Club.

As you can imagine, the design and boat-build teams are beavering away at undisclosed location(s) and at certain stage(s) in the preparations for the launch of our second new ACC yacht later this year or early next year (sorry, exactly when is, as yet, also unable to be disclosed).

andy_bmwPreview
Not undisclosed is the work Andy Falakoa (NZL, shore team) and other
members of the shore team are doing this week on USA 71 at our VLC
Base to prepare for the German Sailing Grand Prix next month. 71 will
race GER 72 and RSA 48 in a three-day event of fleet and match racing at
Kiel (GER) 4-6 Aug.

SUI 100?  Jul 10, 10:50

In the past week or so, the Technical Director has issued sail numbers 92 and 93. Will we get to ACC sail number 100? Will it be Alinghi's?

Speaking of crystal balls, you may find today's post in this regard on the Challenger Commission Blog of interest.

Made for TV  Jul 10, 08:23

He came, he saw, he blessed, he left. Many of our teammates had sky-box seats for yesterday's mass mass conducted by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI which was celebrated on a specially-built (over the past two months) open-air alter on a brdige over the old Turia in la area known here as the "Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias." A number of team apartments, and those of many other AC personnel here, overlook the venue.

Media reports said there were up to a million people for Sunday's mass. We were happy to watch it from the suburbs on TV. Speaking of which, as usual for papal events, the TV was superb. ACM could learn a few things from the Vatican. As Pope John Paul II is reported to have said, "If it doesn't happen on TV, it doesn't happen."

We are told this photo was shot from the top of the Torre de Francia, the

USA AC TV: OLN & TT  Jul 10, 07:24

goodnews
Congrats to our friend Tucker Thompson (Annapolis, USA) who has been involved with BMW ORACLE Racing (and ORACLE BMW before that) as a VIP commentator. Here's the news excerpted in Scuttlebutt (North America) this morning from an article in Tucker's hometown paper:

MAKING THE SHOW
(Annapolis, MD) The recent America’s Cup racing marked a major breakthrough in Tucker Thompson's budding career as a television commentator for the sport of sailing. Thompson, an Annapolis resident, narrated four shows about Louis Vuitton Act 12 that appeared on the Outdoor Life Network. He performed well enough in that role to earn a spot on the broadcast team for the OLN's coverage of the actual America's Cup next summer off Valencia, Spain.

oln_logo_sml1
Thompson has done work for OLN before, but never such a high-profile event. He previously narrated 10 shows about the Swedish Match Tour for the network. Thompson is accustomed to doing on-water commentary of live racing for T2P Productions, the company he co-owns along with fellow Annapolitan Bruce Nairn. The pair have taped nearly 300 regatta shows for viewing on t2p.tv. "This latest opportunity with OLN is just an extension of what Bruce and I have been doing for six years," Thompson said. "It solidifies that all the work we have done has been worth it and we are headed in the right direction."

Outdoor Life Network recently bought the rights to broadcast both the Louis Vuitton Cup and the America's Cup. Al Trautwig will serve as lead announcer with Thompson and Andy Green of Great Britain providing color commentary. - by Bill Wagner, The Capital.

Full story.

More good news -- this month OLN is airing a fair bit of AC coverage, highlights of the recent Acts 10-12. Click here for the schedule and to sign up for email notification of OLN AC programming. By the way, we checked with Andy Green today and he says that the report (above) of his signing with OLN is premature.

The Twelve Teams in Brief  Jul 9, 13:26

playbill1
We are often asked for a quick rundown on each of the twelve teams competing in AC32. Here is a good summary that ran in today's Washington Post, written by Angus Phillips. The full article is worth reading, and is available here. Note that in the summary below France (Areva) is a bit out of date -- they anounced on Friday Thierry Peponnet had been excused from further participation as skipper, to be replaced by his tactician Sebastian Col.

America's Cup Teams
by Angus Phillips, Washington Post Outdoor Editor

USA
BMW Oracle is the second Cup attempt of San Francisco software billionaire Larry Ellison, whose Oracle entry made it to challenger finals in 2003. The team will spend more than $100 million and build two new boats in this attempt, with four-time Cup skipper Chris Dickson of New Zealand at the helm, Frenchman Bertrand Pace calling tactics and Ellison himself steering "when Chris lets me."

NEW ZEALAND
Emirates Team New Zealand is a fully funded, two-boat campaign headed by Grant Dalton, one of the island nation's most famous offshore sailors. Skipper Dean Barker returns from the Kiwis' unsuccessful Cup defense in 2003, with American Terry Hutchinson of Annapolis calling tactics and U.S. Olympian Kevin Hall navigating.

SOUTH AFRICA
Shosholoza is a small-budget campaign headed by Salvatore Sarno, chief of the team's co-sponsor, Mediterranean Shipping Co. Italian-born match-racer Tomasso Chieffi does the driving after countryman Paolo Cian finishes the prestart. Shosholoza takes its name from a 200-year-old song sung by workers on the way to the South African gold mines.

FRANCE
Areva Challenge is sponsored by the global nuclear energy company by the same name and has French Olympian and Cup veteran Thierry Peponnet at the helm. It's a fully funded, one-boat campaign. Dawn Riley, who was on the 1992 Cup-winning America 3 team and the 1995 women's team Mighty Mary, runs the sailing program.

SPAIN
The entry of the host nation is a fully funded, two-boat effort with strong support from the national government and from King Juan Carlos, a keen competitive sailor. The king christened the first new Spanish boat in May; a second is in the works. Polish match-racing champion Karol Jablonski steers.

SWEDEN
Victory Challenge returns from an effort in 2003 that was marred by the death of its founder and chief sponsor, wealthy media magnate Jan Stenbeck, who suffered a heart attack just before racing began. His son, Hugo, has taken over the reins with continuing backing from the family businesses. Skipper is Swedish Olympian Magnus Holmberg.

ITALY
Luna Rossa: The third straight Cup effort from Patrizio Bertelli of the Prada fashion dynasty is rated one of the top three challengers. Bertelli's first Luna Rossa raced against Team New Zealand in the Cup match in 2000; his second was a challenger semifinalist in 2003. Skipper Francesco de Angelis gets help this time from highly regarded, 27-year-old Australian match-racer James Spithill. Luna Rossa will build two new boats for 2007.
Mascalzone Latino: The second Cup effort by Italian ferryboat magnate Vicenzo Onorato has built one new boat for 2007 and is considering a second. The mostly Italian crew is headed by skipper Vasco Vascotto.
Plus 39: A small-budget, one-boat, first-time challenge that takes its title from the telephone dialing code for Italy. Team is led onboard by two British Olympians, gold medalist Iain Percy at the helm and two-time silver medalist Ian Walker calling tactics.

CHINA
Asked about the budget for this first-ever Cup team from China, French-born skipper Pierre Mas just laughed and shook his head. The team is building a hull at bargain basement rates in China and may attach the deck from its training boat, the old French war horse Le Defi. Mas has four or five Chinese nationals on the crew; the challenge is considered a first step in the learning process.

GERMANY
Danish Olympian and America's Cup veteran Jesper Bank is skipper of the fully funded United Internet Team Germany, first Cup challenge from Germany. The team has been training in a cast-off Italian Cup boat while awaiting arrival of its new boat this year. The Germans will host a three-boat regatta with BMW Oracle and Shosholoza in Kiel in August.

SWITZERLAND
Swiss defender Alinghi easily won the Cup from Team New Zealand, 5-0, in Auckland in 2003 after dominating challenger trials. Skipper Russell Coutts later left, creating a void being filled by tactician Brad Butterworth of New Zealand and helmsmen Jochen Schuemann of Germany, Peter Holmberg of the U.S. Virgin Islands and Ed Baird of Florida. Who will emerge as leader remains to be seen, but Alinghi is blessed with money to build two new boats and the benefits of being defender, which means no racing against the rest of the fleet is required until the best-of-nine Cup match next June.

Cool People: Soccer Dad  Jul 8, 18:49

yc9h8079
Ian "Fresh" Burns (AUS) is a bit of an all-around jock. He coaches his kids in, last I knew, soccer and rugby, is an avid cyclist (competing in a tour-de-france style race for semi-pros this weekend), and of course is a world-class sailor.

In addition to serving as design coordinator, he often sails on training days as a member of the testing crew, is an articulate and popular spokesman with sponsors and the media, and serves on our team's Executive Committee.

We're still not sure if we believe the story about him getting the nickname "Fresh" from having a milk delivery route as a kid. Maybe more to do with his teen years?

With World Cup final taking place tonight, it seems especially appropriate to feature soccer dad, Ian "Fresh" Burns: another of the cool people who populate our team.

More Rock Plaza  Jul 8, 08:23

From a post by "mg45" to the 2007AC Forums (General Chatter) this morning:

On a recent trip to NYC,(Sunday, 6/18/06) we were on the observation deck at
30 Rock plaza
(only quite recently open to the public)
There was a small commotion behind me...look about, and there is a bunch of Oracle
folk with a photographer. And the battered LV trunk, and the CUP!!!
Took essentially the same pics that the photographer took.
I guess an advertising shoot. If there is interest I could forward a pic or two to our host?
ps/ Oracle had/has an old cup boat on display on the Roc Plaza
one of those 'had to be there' moments

Thanks "MG" -- glad you enjoyed it. If you want to send us some pics to blog[at]tfehman[dot]com we'll have a look and maybe post them on the BOB. By the way, the Cup was being minded in NYC by ACM's Marcus Hutchinson, among others.

In the meantime, for our dear readers here's an idea of the view (sans Cup) from the Rock Plaza observation deck....

Papa Benedicto  Jul 8, 07:37

Courtesy of our friends at Valencia Life:

Valencia today is breathing an air of expectancy with the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI to participate in and close the World Family Forum. As soon as he arrives, there will be a tremendous peal of all the church bells in Valencia, generating a sound value of some 120 decibels. The Pope’s first action after his motorcade has left the airport and traveled into the City will be to stop at the de Jesus metro station, pray for a short while, and leave a floral tribute to the 42 who died in the recent Metro accident. Receiving Benedict at the station will be the Prince and Princess of the Asturias, as well as several of those who participated in the rescue of the victims. The Pontiff will then travel on to a meeting with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

Also, some of the statistics concerning the Pope’s visit have been highlighted: 1.5 million people are expected to attend the Mass tomorrow presided by Benedict XVI. And the television audience for the event, which is being retransmitted by local station RTVV as host broadcaster, is expected to reach an audience of more than 300 million. Some 4,000 journalists have been credited to cover the event, which will be watched over by 8,000 policemen and soldiers as well as 12,000 volunteers, whilst in the skies overhead NATO AWACS aircraft will further ensure the security of the event. On the ground, some 30 marquees have been set up for the pilgrims, as have 3,000 drinking fountains. More than 650 doctors, nurses and auxiliary health workers will be on standby as will be 37 mobile health care centres.

New York, New York  Jul 6, 17:47

So here's the promised photo retrospective of the terrific Rock Center exhibition of USA 49, newly named "Spirit of New York." The Exhibition closed last Sunday, 2 July. And belated best wishes to our American colleagues, friends and families on the occasion of the American Independence Day earlier this week.

First, the lyrics to THE song:

Start spreading the news
I'm leaving today
I want to be a part of it, New York, New York
These vagabond shoes
Are longing to stray
And make a brand new start of it
New York, New York
I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.

I want to wake up in the city that never sleeps
To find I'm king of the hill, top of the heap
These little town blues
Are melting away
I'll make a brand new start of it
In old New York
If I can make it there
I'll make it anywhere
It's up to you, New York, New York.

Pope Comes to VLC  Jul 6, 06:55

spain-cp-10336628
This weekend His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI will be in Valencia for the World Forum on the Family. Following is an excerpt from an email sent to team members Tuesday by Sofia Barraclough (ESP, Family Services Coordinator) as a heads up on the expected impact on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness in and around VLC this weekend....

SCHEDULE

Saturday 8th morning and early afternoon: After arrival at Valencia's Manises airport at around 11.30 a.m. the Pontiff will be welcomed with a ceremony, followed by his address to the gathering. From the airport the Pope will be driven in an open vehicle to the cathedral of Valencia in the city centre. Pope Benedict will then visit the cathedral, the Holy Chalice Chapel and the Basilica. After reciting the Angelus in the basilica's square, the Pope will be received in the residence of Archbishop Agustín García-Gasco of Valencia, where the Pope will reside during his stay in Valencia.

Saturday 8th evening: The Pope will then go in an open car to the testimonial meeting, which beginning at 8 p.m., will gather more than a million pilgrims at the Puente de Monteolivete (Alameda - Francia Area) in a context of prayer and testimonies.

On Sunday 9th: the Pontiff will preside over the solemn closing Mass at 9:30 a.m. on the Monteolivete bridge. At the end of the Mass he will lead the recitation of the Angelus. After taking bidding farewell to the pilgrims, the Pontiff will leave Manises at 1 p.m. on his flight back to Rome. Family Forum celebrations will continue in the Monteolivete Bridge area until the afternoon and on Monday 10th.

In addition to this, the Spanish Royal Family in full, the president of the Government and many other politicians will be present. So security will be at an all time high over the weekend.

TRAFFIC

Friday 7th from 15:00 hrs: Traffic will be cut as shown on map Area 1; a printed map will be put in each staff member's cubbyhole. (A big one is on notice board in coffee area.) Affecting the centre area of the city, as in Fallas, and extending along the river to the end of Alameda.

Traffic will remain cut until Sunday night or early Monday morning.
Only Paseo Alameda will remain cut off all Monday due to Family Forum in the river.

PARKING

Parking will be forbidden during this time on the streets: Avenida Francia, Paseo Alameda, Calle Menorca and all minor streets that lead off these. Much of the Old Town will be no parking either. Look out for NO PARKING signs that will be put up provisionally all over town.

Other traffic blockades: The Pope will be visiting the city in his pope mobile, at different times over the weekend, which means traffic will also be cut sporadically in other areas of the city as he is driven through, going to and from airport, from Cathedral to river etc. For security reasons, his route will not be made public, so just be patient if you are caught in an area that is temporarily cut off. These areas could be anywhere in the Area 2 or Area 3 (see map.)

PEDESTRIANS

People on foot will not be forbidden to access cut off streets and will be able to move freely through the city, BUT due to the huge amount of visitors this may be difficult at times. If certain areas are too packed, police may stop more people from accessing the crowded areas, but if you are a resident trying to get to your house, you can show the policemen proof of where you live so he will give you priority getting through. [See Sofia's email for details.]

IDENTIFICATION

You need to carry identification AT ALL TIMES, by Spanish law. At times like these when security will be extremely tight, make sure you are carrying either or both of (a) your Spanish Resident Card ("NIE") and (b) your Passport. Driving licenses are NOT a valid form of identification.

CARS

Although the roadblocks will be lifted from time to time for residents to get in and out of the area, we do not recommend you risk leaving your car in the restricted area. Best to leave your car at the Base, from where you will be able to drive out of the city easier.

GETTING OUT OF TOWN

If you are planning on escaping the city, it is recommended you travel on Thursday evening or Friday morning to avoid the rest of the Valencians leaving town. On Friday evening there will be a congregation at the Malvarrosa beach, so the traffic may be cut off around the Port area (similar very messy situation as on 21/22 June -- San Juan's night).

GETTING BACK INTO TOWN

On Sunday evening, to allow the thousands of visitors out of the city, extra lanes will be given to leaving traffic, so there will be fewer lanes (on some motorways only one lane,) coming back into town. Huge traffic jams can be expected for cars returning to Valencia. We recommend you return to Valencia Monday morning instead of Sunday evening.

MOBILE PHONES

For security reasons, mobile coverage will be interrupted on and off during the Pope's visit, so don't depend on your mobiles over the weekend, nor bother calling Vodafone for explanations (the Madrid terrorist bombings of 2003 where detonated by mobile phones).

Tragedy Comes to VLC  Jul 4, 08:30

valenciamourningflag
Yesterday most of us got the shocking news of the subway accident here in VLC from a team text advising us of the tragedy. (Our team uses SMS -- mobile phone texting -- to keep us wired together on daily schedules and important developments.)

Some of us heard about it first from concerned family and friends calling from around the world -- news of the tragedy had spread rapidly and globally via CNN, BBC, etc.

As far as we know this morning, no one directly involved in the America's Cup (let alone our team) was among those who were injured or died.

The government has decreed three days of mourning for the victims that will start today, with a five minute silence in front of local institutions. Funeral services for the victims will take place early this evening with King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia expected to be present. An extensive enquiry is currently under way to determine the causes of the accident. Thus far it would appear that excessive speed that caused one of the wheels to come off the lead carriage were the main reasons for the tragedy -- not terrorism as many initially feared.

Flags at the team bases were lowered to half mast yesterday afternoon, and last night's big ACM party was cancelled out of respect for those who lost their lives and their grieving families.

We share their grief and offer our heartfelt condolences to those who lost a loved-one yesterday. At least for another year, this is our hometown, too. Monday's shocking event is yet another reminder of our fragile existence here and everywhere.

As Larry Ellison has said, the only true miracle is life itself.

Day Off!  Jul 3, 10:49

After a long, hard slog these past three weeks (to say nothing of the last three months given all the goings on since 87 arrived in VLC on the Antonov, getting her commissioned, the christening party, the three Acts, the Rock Center Exhibition, etc.) the team has a well-deserved day off.

But just one day off, as by this time tomorrow de-brief meetings for every department will be in full swing at the Base. During Act 12, at times it felt like the regatta had been on for a month, but now that it's over it seems it literally flew by.

Last evening on the roof of their team base Alinghi threw a spirited "season-ending" party -- classy but relaxed -- attended by 40 or so from our team, and another 500+ people from the other teams, ACM, officials, etc. In the heat of the night the Moet was flowing and the music blaring. Everything in Spain is loud. One hears (with ears still ringing the next morning) that some danced until 0400. Not your Ed., who like many was too pooped to participate much beyond midnight. Regardless, it was a right good piss-up, and put an exclamation point on what can only be called the best match racing in the modern history of the Cup, and probably ever.

This morning the local weather service has issued a heat warning, saying that parts of the Valencian community will see temps north of 38 (100F). Things are just warming up in time for the Pope's visit this coming weekend. Well over one million visitors are expected. One has no idea where they will reside while here -- every hotel room within 300km of VLC is said to be booked. And the sidewalks on either side of the Old Turia riverbed, now Valencia's city-long central park and where His Holiness will present this weekend, are lined with, literally, miles and miles of portapots. Organizers must have gathered up every dunnie in Spain. One can only imagine how this city is going to look -- and smell -- a week from today.

In the meantime, seems a good day to reflect on the past weeks' work, and the work we have cut out for us in the remaining months of AC 32. Ideally, after finding someplace nice and cool.

Post Script...  Jul 3, 10:30

...to our previous post on this topic.... The follow up ruling from the Jury concerning apportionment of cost for the collision Saturday with Luna Rossa, as reported on the ACM website:

02.07.2006
Jury awards repair costs to BMW ORACLE Racing

At a hearing on Sunday morning, the Jury for the 32nd America’s Cup awarded repair costs arising from the collision between BMW ORACLE Racing and Luna Rossa to the American team.

Under the process described in Notice of Race for Louis Vuitton Act 12 (NoR 2.4d), the Jury is required to apportion responsibility for damage to the boats.

The Jury ruled that Luna Rossa must pay its own costs, as well as 80% of the repair bill on the American boat. ‘Costs’ refer to ‘extra’ costs, like outside contractors, materials, etc., but not for in-house boat builders.

Since the cost of repairs to Luna Rossa will be much higher than the cost of repairs to BMW ORACE Racing, the decision that Luna Rossa pays for all its own damage plus 80% of the damage to USA 87, indicates an even higher apportionment of responsibility for the damage caused by the incident.

This is consistent with the penalty on the water from the Umpires, and the Jury ruling last night that saw redress awarded to BMW ORACLE Racing, including one point which gave them the win in the petit final of Louis Vuitton Act 12.

Email just received from Max Hoellerl (AUT, marketing team) who has been in NYC all this time project managing the Rockefeller Plaza exhibition with USA 49:

On Sunday at 6:00 pm we closed the exhibit for the public and started with the dismantle. By now almost everything is gone. Half an hour ago, at 2:45 am [Monday], USA 49 was loaded successfully on the truck and is now on its way back to CA.

Thanks, Max, for the email and a job well done. When we get a moment this week, will post a Rock Plaza photo-retrospective here on the BOB. In the meantime, here are two snaps from Max....

Not since 1851, when the schooner America faced down a fleet of 16 British boats to win the first America's Cup, has the United States faced as daunting a task in the world's premier yacht race as it does here.

That's the opening line in an excellent article in yesterday's Washinton Post, written by Veteran Cup journalist Angus Phillips who has covered every AC since 1980. Nice to finally have Angus back in the saddle and here in VLC for Act 12.

Below, the photo and caption that accompanied the article....

Annuit Coeptis  Jul 3, 08:14

From a letter in Scuttlebutt (North American edition) this morning:

* From Bill Menninger (Regarding Craig Fletchers observation): Patriotism is in the eye of the beholder. I think it is great the US has a participant in the Americas Cup and a solid contender to boot. I commend the corporations that contribute to our spaort, as this is also the "American way". If we relied on government sponsorship we would either be living in a communist state or we would be paying even higher taxes. Thank God for corporations, free enterprise and Larry Ellison.

Amen.
