BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog

www.bmworacleracing.com/blog
Tom EhmanWelcome to the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog, periodic postings and postulations for our families, friends and fans as we pursue with passion our challenge for the 32nd America's Cup.

In June 2005, the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog was born. The enthusiastic response we have received since then has encouraged us to continue the Blog this year. The BMW ORACLE Racing Team, which has over 140 members worldwide, would like to give anyone interested the opportunity to get a closer look at the personal stories surrounding our team and the people involved. While we are professionals on a mission to win the Cup, there is a human-interest side to all that. And in many ways our team is like an extended family.

We would like to share with you our passion for sailing, the motivation it takes to meet difficult challenges, and some of our trials and tribulations.

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came." --USA President John F. Kennedy, at a dinner for the crews in Newport, RI on the eve of the 1962 America's Cup Match.

NASDAQ TV Commercial  Mar 9, 22:14

For our first-ever video post here on the BOB we present a sneak preview of the terrific new NASDAQ TV commercial that features Oracle Corp. and a prominent member of our sailing team -- Larry Ellison (USA, Afterguard and Alternate Helmsman). In this commercial Larry is helming a BMWOR Match Race 40 in San Francisco Bay. We are told the commercial will begin airing in the USA and internationally in mid-March....

Equal Opportunity  Mar 9, 11:48

Most days the New York Times runs a piece called "This Day in Sports" recalling the top sports stories, at least from an American perspective, of the past 100 or so years.

Today's NYT top story is about the African-American athlete, Jesse Owens, "who arrived on the national stage in a collegiate track meet by breaking a sprint record that had stood for seven years. From this moment on, the 21-year-old Owens dominated track and field, his career reaching its zenith when he won four gold medals at the 1936 Berlin Olympics (see Aug. 4). Those performances were historically significant because he disproved on the field Hitler's doctrine of Aryan supremacy."

Interestingly, the NYT says today's "runner-up" story is about the America's Cup and, to a degree, is also about equal opportunity -- in this case for women:

1994: Bill Koch, who successfully defended the America's Cup in 1992, announced that the first all-female crew in the history of the competition would sail his yacht, America 3, in the defender trials in January 1995. Koch later reneged, using a man as the starter and tactician, and America 3 lost to Black Magic of New Zealand, which won the Cup.

However, the august New York Times got some of the story wrong. "America Cubed" was the syndicate name, and their yacht USA-43 Mighty Mary actually lost to Team Dennis Conner during the defender trials in a bizarre, light-air final race that Mighty Mary led until just before the finish line -- one of the most thrilling finishes (or heartbreaking, depending, of course, on your perspective) in the history of Cup racing.

With their win that day off Point Loma, TDC advanced to the Match against the Kiwis, but first did a deal to switch from their slower USA-34 Stars & Stripes to PACT 95's yacht USA-36 Young America (the third defense candidate, and otherwise known as The Mermaid for the painting on its topsides by the noted artist Roy Lichtenstein). It didn't matter -- Team New Zealand's Black Magic was by far the best boat and team in San Diego that year, and in the AC Match the Defender was drubbed 5-0 by the Kiwis.

The man Bill Koch used as "starter and tactician" was David Dellenbaugh, brother of AC 32 chief umpire, Brad Dellenbaugh. Coincidentally, he displaced the American Olympic medalist JJ Isler, wife of BMW ORACLE's navigator Peter Isler. Of the experience Dave has written:

But in the end we were still the Women's Team, and the sailing crew exceeded almost everyone's expectations. The women proved that they are strong enough and skilled enough to function as sailors at the top level. They were able to do all this because they improved together as a team more than any of their competitors. In my opinion, that is a credit to the women, to the support network behind them, and to the principles of teamwork and attitude....

Historical footnote: through the '95 Cup cooperation by teams -- indeed, sharing equipment and even switching boats -- was permitted among teams representing yachts clubs of the same nation (defenders and challengers). After the Team NZ win, they installed strict rules in the AC 30 Protocol against sharing of design information, yachts and major equipment between competing teams even of the same nation, and those rules remain today.

Milestone  Mar 5, 08:03

We are sometimes asked why BMW has partnered with the AC team that carries the flag of an American yacht club. One assumes that at least part of the answer can be discerned from an AP story running today on MiamiHerald.com....

BMW produces one-millionth vehicle here

GREER, S.C. - BMW Manufacturing Co. has produced its one-millionth vehicle in South Carolina.

The blue Z4 M Roadster, which came off the line Tuesday, will be on display at the Upstate factory for several weeks before moving next door to the Zentrum museum.
On Friday, the company celebrated how far the plant has come since producing its first vehicle in 1994. It has grown from 600 employees in a 1.2 million-square-foot plant to 4,500 employees in a facility double that size.

"This is truly a remarkable milestone for this company," said Bob Nitto, vice president of corporate affairs.

The car took four days to complete, much longer than the usual 24-hour start-to-finish cycle, because BMW officials purposefully extended the production time.
"We wanted each of the departments to have a celebration along the way," said BMW spokeswoman Bunny Richardson.

Winkie Seay of Spartanburg, who works in the paint shop, said all of her co-workers wanted to touch the car as it passed through their department.

Iris Campbell, the widow of the late Gov. Carroll Campbell who is credited with bringing the plant to South Carolina, said her husband would be proud of the company's growth.

"Carroll's probably smiling down on this day," she said Friday.

Gov. Mark Sanford, who has been criticized for the state's high unemployment rate, said BMW is a leader in the state's economy. South Carolina is home to 48 BMW suppliers, he said.

Production of the Z4, the first vehicle launched at the Palmetto State plant, began in 2002. Production of the new Z4 M Roadster, Z4 Coupe and M Couple is expected to begin this spring.

"Judging by the reception so far, we expect this baby to be a very, very hot car," said Clemens Schmitz-Justen, president of BMW Manufacturing.

Oscar  Mar 4, 15:58

One of our search engines turned up this AC tidbit today -- according to Girl Hacker's Random Log the official Academy Award Gift Bag for presenters and winners at Sunday's soiree includes a gift certificate for a "ride on an America's Cup sailboat."

Also in the bag of swag, the total contents of which are said to be worth US$100,000, there's one for the chocoholics: M&M'S Candies is presenting nominees with personalized M&Ms with their names and words of congratulations printed on each M. Only in Hollywood...and no doubt eBay will be a bit busier than usual on Monday.

En Route  Mar 2, 06:12

The minute the plane levelled off at 35,000 feet the Ukranian crew of the Russian Antonov 320 cargo plane were unwinding the top off a supersize can of German bratwurst. Ten minutes later the windowless cabin of the crew area of the plane - located above the cargo area just in front of the tail - delivering the first genuinely new generation 5 boat for the 2007 America's Cup boat was filled with the smell of frying sausages.

Up front the captain and his henchmen, who half an hour before take off had arrived up the gang plank hauling sacks of potatoes and rolls of toilet paper, were navigating the 30-year-old plane with a pocket-sized GPS that you buy from a fishing shop. Inside was 30,000 man hours worth of carbonfibre instrument that represents the front end of the cutting edge of technology, the new BMW Oracle Racing boat bound from Anacortes, two hours north of Seattle, to Valencia, in a veil of secrecy; no one new the boat was coming - or even that it was anywhere near completion - until the boat rolled into the BMW Oracle base at around eight in the evening on Tuesday 28 February.

Popular Team on the Web  Mar 1, 16:09

From time to time ACM publishes the webstats for the official site, www.americascup.com. Below are charts of the average number of unique visitors per day, and the total number of referrals per month from their site to the various team sites. Click on either chart to enlarge....

Nice to see that BMWOR continues to get more "click-throughs" from the
ACM site to our team site than any other team, including Alinghi. The "Total"
column is for all months from July 05, and BMWOR has led every month, not
that we're competing. ;)

Seattle to Valencia Non-Stop  Feb 28, 21:45

As you will have read on our main team website, our new ACC yacht (USA-XX as it is being called for now -- we have yet to disclose the sail number that has been assigned to it) arrived this afternoon by cargo plane on a non-stop 13-hour flight from Seattle. By 2100 it was safe and sound in the boat shed at our Team Base.

It is not the first time an ACC yacht has been flown; a number were shipped by plane from Europe for the Cups in both San Diego and Auckland.

Notable, however, is that it got here before a number of other new ACC yachts which would have been under construction earlier. Moreover, it was in the shed here in VLC before a single word about it appeared on any website. Nice work team!

Shore team member Scotty Sanford (NZL) successfully shepherded
USA-XX from VLC airport to our Team Base. Not an easy task, but

and other unforseen obstacles.

a minute.

New Wheels  Feb 27, 17:35

The bicycle is a popular if not main mode of transport for AC teams, including ours, both in the Port America's Cup and around town.

Today, much to our pleasant surprise, 21 brand new BMW "Cruise Bikes" arrived at the Base, compliments of BMW Lifestyle. They will comprise a "bike pool" available to team members. Sharp-looking, rugged gear -- beach cruiser meets mountain bike.

The Start  Feb 26, 20:01

Have finished reading Matthew Symonds "intimate protrait" of Larry Ellison called Softwar (Simon & Schuster, www.simonsays.com. To say that the book is frank and revealing would be an understatement.

A unique feature of the book is Larry's "right of reply" throughout the book. While he did not have the right to alter the author's words, it was agreed that he could add footnoted commentary to express a counterpoint to the author's conclusions or to amplify points Larry felt important.

In one such footnote (page 462), I found the following nugget which, to my mind, is as clear and concise a description of a match race start as I have read anywhere:

The start is critical in match racing. Winning the start does not necessarily mean that [one yacht] has started in front of [the other]; it means [winning] the side of the race course you want. Five minutes before the race begins, both boats decide which side of the race course has the better wind conditions: more wind and/or a favorable shift up the course. If both boats pick the same side of the course, they fight for it by executing a complex set of manuevers with each boat trying to gain a right-of-way advantage against the other. This five-minute maneuvering period before the start is called the pre-start. It's the most exciting part of match racing."

Overall a very interesting read, especially Larry's perspective on the 2003 campaign. Highly recommend it to anyone connected with our team.

100 Years Before the AC Class  Feb 24, 18:44

Check out the very interesting feature that is currently the lead story on the ACM website about 1893 defense candidates Pilgrim (below) and Jubilee. Quoting from the story by Jacques Taglang with translation from the original French by Peter Rusch, "[Pilgrim and Jubilee] were, in 1893, exceptional and audacious craft. To observe closely their modern offspring such as the Tempest class, the Soling and the America’s Cup Class, is to see the power of this early design breakthrough."
