BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog

www.bmworacleracing.com/blog
Tom EhmanWelcome to the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog, periodic postings and postulations for our families, friends and fans as we pursue with passion our challenge for the 32nd America's Cup.

In June 2005, the BMW ORACLE Racing Team Blog was born. The enthusiastic response we have received since then has encouraged us to continue the Blog this year. The BMW ORACLE Racing Team, which has over 140 members worldwide, would like to give anyone interested the opportunity to get a closer look at the personal stories surrounding our team and the people involved. While we are professionals on a mission to win the Cup, there is a human-interest side to all that. And in many ways our team is like an extended family.

We would like to share with you our passion for sailing, the motivation it takes to meet difficult challenges, and some of our trials and tribulations.

"We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch - we are going back from whence we came." --USA President John F. Kennedy, at a dinner for the crews in Newport, RI on the eve of the 1962 America's Cup Match.

NZMRC -- Day 2 (Friday)  Nov 25, 09:34

Our Antipodean Correspondent, Richard Gladwell, filed this report and foto soon after racing concluded in Auckland Friday evening at the NZMRC:

At the end of the second day of the Round Robin phase, Dean Barker leads the regatta with a 14 wins and no losses. Chris Dickson is tied for second with Simon Minoprio on 11 wins and 3 losses. Racing today was in a moderate northerly breeze making for some excellent spectator viewing with the starts virtually at their feet on the Westhaven seawall –- not too different from standing on the sideline at a Rugby match. Barker has topped Dickson in both their encounters, with Dickson scoring a surprise loss to Brian Trubovich after the America’s Cup skipper conceded a penalty. Racing will continue tomorrow, however strong winds are forecast. The top four progess to a semi-finals with the winners advancing to the finals on Sunday.

different match) just behind.

Many thanks, Richard, for your continuing diligence.

P.S. In checking out the results table on the RNZYS site, there is a race result "Jury beat Powrie by 4 secs." Huh? The Jury is racing, too? Actually, there's a competitor named Laurie Jury who currently stands 7th on 6-6. So if the Jury ever protests Mr Jury, the protest list would read Jury vs. Jury? If Laurie Jury married...LOL, enough.

COOL PEOPLE -- Wizard von München  Nov 24, 11:13

STORY GENERATION  Nov 24, 10:23

The story below, generated thanks to a contribution from afar, is a reminder that we welcome all such submissions -- especially those with photos. BMW ORACLE Racing is, literally, a 24/7 global operation with interesting goings-on somewhere in the world almost every day of the year. Much is worth reporting here, so your submissions are most helpful and welcome.

GENERATIONS  Nov 24, 10:14

Photo below is courtesy of our old friend and NZL-based yachting journalist Richard Gladwell. He took it during last weekend's qualifying regatta, won by Dicko & Co., for the NZ national match racing championship that begins in Auckland today.

Richard writes:

Here is a shot for you from the first day [of the qualifying regatta]. 1996 is Chris Dickson, 1994 is Tom Powrie – the top sailor from the RNZYS Youth program. The crew in the background is Adam Minioprio another Youth Program skipper. Maybe people will now understand why there are so many good Kiwi match racers. Where else in the world would you get guys that are either still in high school, or just out of it coming up against America’s Cup sailors like Appleton, Barker and Dickson -- and in a serious regatta?

Indeed. And not just match racers. Thanks, Richard.

SPECTACULAR  Nov 23, 13:11

In another "know your partner" post, one could not let the superlative CNET review of the 2006 BMW 7-Series go unmentioned.

The Editor's Rating is a "spectacular" 9.0 out of 10. Their bottom line: "The 2006 BMW 750Li boasts one of the best interiors of any standard production vehicle, with technology amenities galore. Neither this nor the impressive performance comes cheap, but discerning buyers at this level will be satisfied with the complete package."

The team has a few of these 7-Series driving machines, albeit at the moment the 2005 models, which some of us have had the privelege of driving. All I can say to the above is, "Amen."

7SeriesInterior_bmwPreview
As Malin Burnham noted last weekend in San Diego while he was giving
us a lift in his new 7-Series, it probably has the nicest interior of any
production automobile. CNET agrees. (Click on the image to enlarge.)

Sign of the Times  Nov 22, 18:12

AC-related signage in European airports is notably on the rise. To say nothing of the display of USA-61 at MUC this summer and fall, the number of companies already displaying adverts is impressive. We have recently seen Cup ads at CPH (Copenhagen), FRA (Frankfurt), LHR (London Heathrow), MUC (Munich) and MXP (Milano Malpensa) -- more than 18 months before the end of AC 32! Good to see our sponsors promoting their brands, along with the Cup and our sport.

AND THE BEAT GOES ON [updated 17:05 Mon]  Nov 21, 14:14

VALENCIA -- It is a nice Monday morning in VLC. A bit overcast, but mostly sunny, warm and breezy. In the Port America's Cup (née Dársena Interior) Grant "Guthrie" Davidson and his team are hard at work on our new base, making ready for our imminent move in. Scheduled maintenance continues on 71 and 76 in the boat sheds at our new base. The design team members resident in VLC are beavering away at our so-called "Port Office" across the street from our soon-to-be-finished new Base, as are the marketing team and our finance and admin staff.

Other teams are trying to test and train in the dodgy late-autumn sailing conditions, including Alinghi, Shosholoza and apparently Mascalzone Latino, though I am not sure about the latter. Work continues on many of the other bases as well.

Elsewhere, and upcoming....

SETE -- Congrats to Bertrand Pacé, Zach Hurst, Kazuhiko Sofuku and Rod Dawson on their win in the Sete Match Race Regatta in Bert's home town (Sete, France) last week. Our guys bested K-Challenge's Sebastien Col & co. 2-0 in the final.

AUCKLAND -- Likewise, kudos to Chris Dickson, Robbie Naismith, Kazuhiko Sofuku, Paul Westlake, and Jamie Gale [thanks, Roland, for filling me in] who finished first in the qualifying series held over the weekend in Auckland for the New Zealand Match Racing Championship. The qualifying regatta came to an early end yesterday after light winds meant only one flight was completed. BMW Oracle Racing's team won on a score of 9-1 [not 4-1, thnx CM]. The NZ Match Racing Championship is a four-day regatta in Auckland starting this Thursday, and includes a number of other big-name AC sailors.

MALAYSIA -- The inaugural Monsoon Cup, the 50th anniversary event of the Swedish Match Tour, will be held 29 Nov thru 4 Dec in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia.

Besides being the 50th event of the Swedish Match Tour, the Monsoon Cup is garnering significant notice in Malaysia and throughout Asia. The last two days of the event, Dec. 3-4, are scheduled to broadcast live on ESPN Asia and ESPN Hong Kong. Malaysia’s TV3 and ESPN India plan to join the live broadcast on Dec. 4. There are also plans to carry the final two days live on the Tour’s broadband Internet channel -- www.SwedishMatchTour.tv. Monsoon Cup Entrants as of 17 Nov:

Dean Barker (NZL) Emirates Team New Zealand – Four career victories.
Sally Barkow (USA) – Reigning ISAF Women’s world match-racing champion.
Francesco Bruni (ITA) Luna Rossa Challenge – First career Tour event.
Russell Coutts (NZL) Coutts Racing – Most wins (6) in fewest starts (11).
Chris Dickson (NZL) BMW Oracle Racing – Former MR world champion and CEO of AC32's leading challenger.
Cameron Dunn (NZL) Mascalzone Latino – Capitalia – Seeking first Tour victory.
Peter Gilmour (AUS) PST – Reigning two-time Tour champion.
Björn Hansen (SWE) – Seeking first Tour victory.
Magnus Holmberg (SWE) Victory Challenge – 24 top-8 finishes, third most on Tour.
Staffan Lindberg (FIN) Alandia Sailing Team – Placed in tie for third on Tour leaderboard.
Thierry Peponenet (FRA) K-Challenge – Seeking first Tour victory.
Ian Williams (GBR) Team Musto – Placed fourth at St. Moritz Match Race.

AUCKLAND -- More championship match racing will take place at Auckland in January. Five of the world’s top ten ranked match race sailors, along with BMW ORACLE's Chris Dickson and ETNZ's Dean Barker are set to compete in the biggest yacht race New Zealand has seen since the America’s Cup -- the new "Auckland Cup."

The regatta - the Auckland Match Racing Cup - will take place 25-29 January, 2006 on the Waitemata Harbour, city side of the Harbour Bridge, near Viaduct Harbour. During five days of racing, ten teams of five members each will compete for a prize pool of US$100,000 put forward by race organiser Springs Promotions. Teams will sail on the Farr MRX match racing fleet used for the former Steinlager Line 7 Cup regattas.

Nine of the maximum ten entries in the competition are confirmed. The tenth entry will be the top team (that has not already qualified) from the New Zealand Match Racing Championships 2005, which will take place across four days of racing starting on November 24. The nine confirmed skippers and teams are:

1. Sebastian Col, K-Challenge
2. Bertrand Pace, BMW ORACLE Racing
3. Chris Dickson, BMW ORACLE Racing

4. Dean Barker, Emirates Team New Zealand
5. Ed Baird, Alinghi
6. Ian Williams, Great Britain
7. Mathieu Richard, France
8. Staffan Lindberg, Finland
9. Magnus Holmberg, Sweden/Victory Challenge

GOOD PARTNERS  Nov 18, 12:22

Tuesday evening was the annual prizewinners' dinner at the Royal Thames Yacht Club in Knightsbridge, London. Earlier this year RTYC partnered with BMW UK-Ireland for support of their racing and training programs, and by all accounts the relationship has been very successful.

The invitation to dinner read "black tie, no medals" -- good thing because about the only medals I have are from 7th grade band camp. A very nice evening with a number of long-time UK sailing friends present, including former ISAF Vice President Robin Aisher and his wife Val, Newport friends Tim and Kathy Herring, event promoter Gavia Wilkinson-Cox, and Dr Frank Newton. Frank's son, Tim Newton, was test team manager for the BMW Williams F1 team, and sailed as 18th man with BMW ORACLE Racing during a training session in Valencia this year.

RTYC member Hugh Agnew won the prize for outstanding contribution to the sport and the Club. Coincidentally, we had met Hugh at Malmo during Acts 6 and 7 where his beautiful motor yacht Rum Jungle was in use as one of our VIP spectator boats, bringing BMW guests across from Copenhagen and then around the race course each day.

Jim O'Donnell, managing director of BMW UK-Ireland, led a small group of BMW guests who enjoyed the dinner and awards presentation. Also present was Peter Walker, the BMW UK sports marketing head who oversees the Royal Thames partnership with Malcolm McKeag, RTYC's Chief Sailing Officer.

After dinner I spoke briefly to a rapt audience of nearly 200 members and guests on "What's New for 32" and updating them on developments and progress within BMW ORACLE Racing. As we found in the USA during the Yacht Club Tour, so far in the UK there has not been a lot of coverage AC 32 -- but there is no shortage of interest. Those assembled were particularly pleased to hear about the number of Brits spread among the twelve AC32 teams, including BMWOR team members Saskia Green (operations), Dave Le Pelley (design), Jon Williams (shore) and Graeme Winn (design).

At noon on Wedensday, BMW hosted a luncheon for key Brit media at which we updated them on the same topics. The video that Gary Jobson produced for the USA YC Tour was shown and much appreciated by those in attendance. We also announced that we were now preparing to enter the construction phase for the first of our two new ACC yachts. The press release issued later that day by our marketing team is posted on our main team website.

Yachting World's online editor, Sue Pelling, was among those present Wednesday. Last evening Sue posted a nice story about the Wednesday luncheon and our yacht construction project and team in Anacortes, WA. Other stories no doubt will follow.

A successful and pleasant conclusion to a long and at times hectic "roadshow" trip.

SUNNY SAN DIEGO [updated 01:35 24 Nov]  Nov 18, 03:48

Update: Email from Graham Biehl -- "Also looking on the blog I noticed you had a pic of a blonde-haired kid in a brown jacket. That's actually my brother Cameron Biehl. He sails skiffs primarily, he placed 12th at this years 29er Worlds, and is fixing up a 49er in our back yard right now! Hope that helps with the blog." TFE -- It does, indeed, thanks.

IT'S OVER!  Nov 15, 00:35

LAX 1515 Monday

The eighth and final stop is behind us. Another great evening. Another good turnout last night at San Diego YC, including lots of old friends from the Cup and the years we lived there for the '88, '92 and '95 Cups.

Good to have Peter "Pedro" Isler and John "Z" Ziskind joining us for their first appearances. Z has family in SD and is looking to buy a home there eventually. Pedro is a real pro, on the water and off. With little prep time, he gave a very interesting and entertaining presentation.

Peter, Gary Jobson and and I have known each other now for -- yikes -- some 30+ years, having sailed against each other in college. In all those years it was the first time we have been together in such a presentation, and it was good fun.

Eric Doyle, who had been racing in a Star Regatta in SD over the weekend snuck into the back of the room -- maintaining a low profile succeeded in keeping us from dragging him into the presentation as well. Eric and Sheila now live up the coast a bit (Orange County), but he is a popular local figure having previously lived in SD and adding his name to the list of many "San Diegans" who have won the Star Class Worlds.

Will blog some wrap up thoughts on the past three weeks when there is time. Also have some great pix to post from being in Anacortes, WA last week with Mark Turner's BMWOR boat construction team at "Core Builders." Impressive set up, and a nice group of people working with Mark. More on that later this week.

They've just called the flight, so will have to post the SD pix after arriving on the other side of the pond.

At SYC yesterday afternoon we visited with Bruce and Bobbi Campbell in preparation for tonight's big show. "Big" because we will have more team members involved than at any other stop, including Dicko, Fresh and, for the first time, Paul Bieker, Thomas Hahn, and Mark Turner.

Bruce and Bobbi said we will have another sell-out crowd. Focus will be on design and construction, since our two new boats will eventually be built just north of Seattle. No doubt Jane will have a full report on our main team website soon after tonight's show, and as always we will endeavor to get fotos and a blog piece posted by first thing tomorrow morning if not yet tonight USA Pacific time.

BMW Power Cup -- updated 18 Nov  Nov 7, 19:09

As a welcome break from YC Tour posts, meanwhile back in Valencia....

55 drivers, mechanics, and others who were part of the BMW Power Cup in Valencia last week toured the new BMW ORACLE Base on Saturday morning. After arriving by bus they were guided to the third floor terrace where, with a sweeping view of the Port America's Cup, Grant "Guthrie" Davidson (our Base Operations and Logistics Manager) briefed them on AC history and the 32nd edition. Two short videos on BMWOR and the AC were shown in what soon will be the Marketing Team offices.

Then the guests were given an insiders' look through the boat sheds including USA 76 by Guthrie, shore team manager Tim Hacket, and sailors Carl Williams and David Brooke. The guests were keenly interested in the equipment and had many questions on design, technical and performance.

Perhaps the highlight of the tour was at the end when a few of the more courageous guests (anyone who would drive a motorbike around a track at breakneck speeds can't be too timid!) were hoisted up the mast by a few of their Power Cup mates who did the grinding.

In return, BMW ORACLE team members received tickets to the Valencia Moto GP. Another good "cross-over" event thanks to BMW's involvement in both motorsport and sailsport. Now how about a crossover with the BMW golfers!

P.S. Just received an email from Guthrie who says, "The day at the track was sensational. Everyone shared the passes for the paddock, the VIP village and we all got to the BMW hospitality. And thanks to our guys who gave up their time on a Saturday. And yes, bring on the golfers, and the courses!"

TRAGIC NEWS  Nov 6, 23:18

13:30 Sunday

We have just learned of the tragic death Friday of Victory Challenge's Gerry Moosbrugger, and it is with great sadness that we pass on the news to our families and friends. Gerry was a popular figure on the world sailing scene and a good friend of many on our team. Victory Challenge has issued a statement which is also posted on their website.

MODERN TIMES  Nov 6, 22:14

Within an hour or so of each YC Tour roadshow there is a full report by Jane posted on our main team website. It takes the concerted efforts of a number of people at BMW and their agencies to make this happen. Our thanks to them all. In addition to the main web reports, webmaster Roland Neubauer has created a special USA YC Tour feature with detailed info and photos posted after each stop. Check it out.

Sleepless in Seattle -- Not!  Nov 6, 20:33

If it is Sunday, it must be Seattle. And what a switch from sunny, warm Southern California where it was 80 deg F (27C) yesterday. When Jane and I arrived here last evening, it was 40 deg F (5C) and raining cats and dogs. The locals say it has been raining for a week, and will continue until, well, May. Regardless, and as many of you will know, Seattle is a beautiful, vibrant and cosmopolitan city.

The closest restaurant to our hotel turns out to be -- LOL -- a tapas (Spanish) restaurant. Across the street for a quick "deener" and it was like being back in Valencia. Home away from home. And, if nothing else, it's great sleeping weather. After doing shows three nights in a row in three different cities, sleep came easily last night in Seattle.

Sunday morning, and finally a few free moments to post about Friday evening's Stop Six in Los Angeles at Cal Yacht Club....

No surprise that Friday night shows (see the GGYC blog post) bring a high-spirited crowd, and Cal YC was no exception. Another SRO turnout, an auction that almost topped Long Beach's record total the night before, and many incisive questions from the large audience of nearly 100% racing sailors. As always, check out Jane's report on our main team site for details.
